VCP Series — Vertical Centrifugal Pump
High-efficiency vertical centrifugal pump engineered for continuous-duty industrial and wastewater applications.
The VCP Series is Weltech's range of vertical centrifugal pumps designed for installations where floor space is limited or suction conditions demand a sump-mounted arrangement. The pump column and bowl assembly are submerged directly into the liquid, eliminating priming requirements entirely and enabling continuous, unattended operation. Built to handle clean water, mildly aggressive process fluids, and clarified wastewater, the VCP Series offers superior hydraulic efficiency through precision-engineered impeller profiles and a volute casing optimised for minimum recirculation losses. Available in multiple column lengths and motor frame sizes, the series is configurable for pit depths from 0.5 m to 4 m and can be supplied with enclosed or semi-open impellers depending on liquid characteristics.

How the VCP Series Works
Liquid Entry at the Sump
The pump bowl assembly is submerged below the liquid level in the wet well or sump. Liquid enters through the strainer at the base of the column under positive head, requiring no priming or foot valves.
Centrifugal Acceleration
The rotating impeller imparts kinetic energy to the liquid, accelerating it radially outward. The precision-volute casing converts this velocity into pressure, building the required discharge head.
Column Discharge to Surface
Pressurised liquid travels up through the column pipe and exits at the discharge elbow mounted at the pump platform level, where it connects directly to the site piping network.
Motor Drive from Above
The motor is mounted above the sump on a baseplate, keeping all electrical components dry and accessible. The drive shaft runs down the column with steady bearings at regular intervals to prevent vibration.
VCP Series — Frequently Asked Questions
Does the VCP require priming before start-up?
No. Because the bowl assembly is permanently submerged below the liquid level, the pump is inherently self-primed at every start. There is no need for foot valves, priming tanks, or vacuum priming systems.
What column lengths are available as standard?
Standard column lengths are 0.5 m, 1.0 m, 1.5 m, 2.0 m, 2.5 m, 3.0 m, and 4.0 m. Custom lengths can be fabricated on request for non-standard pit depths. Column sections are flanged and bolt together on-site.
Can the VCP handle sludge or slurry?
The standard VCP with enclosed impeller is rated for clarified liquids with solids up to 5–8 mm. For heavier sludge or slurry duty, a semi-open impeller variant with wider clearances is available — please specify liquid characteristics at enquiry stage.
Is VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) operation supported?
Yes. All VCP motors are wound for VFD compatibility with Class F insulation and inverter-duty rating as standard. Operating speed range is 600–3000 RPM depending on the frame size selected.
What is the minimum submergence depth required?
A minimum submergence of 300 mm above the top of the inlet strainer is recommended to prevent vortex formation and air entrainment. Anti-vortex baffles can be supplied for shallow sump installations.
